The text is: “In memory of Charles Barrett ’16 who died May 21, 1924 as a result of illness contracted in an explosion on the United States S. Brooklyn in Yokohama Harbor, Japan during the world war. As a tribute to his splendid loyalty and leadership and as homage to a most worthy gridiron adversary we respectfully dedicate this tablet to Cornell University, his teammates, and friends and the 1915 Pennsylvania football team.”

Willard Straight (‘01) donated $100,000 (equivalent to $2,596,000 in 2018) to construct the Schoellkopf Memorial Hall in 1912 in memory of his good friend Henry Schoellkopf (‘02). Students, faculty and administrators signed a petition asking the U.S. War Department to establish an aviation ground school at Cornell which was granted. Cornell became one of six universities to host a ground school. Schoellkopf Hall initially served as a barracks for the aviation ground school at Cornell. As enrollment in the ground school outgrew the space the hundreds of enrollees were moved to the new New York State Armory and Drill Hall, later to be named Barton Hall. Five pilots became aces – with more than five victories each. Lawrence Kingsley Callahan (‘16) and John Owen Willson Donaldson (1916-17), flew for England’s Royal Air Force. Jesse Orin Creech (1916-17), James Armand Meissner (‘18), and Leslie Jacob Rummell, (‘16), for the U.S. [12][19]

Schoellkopf Hall is now the center for football activities and sits alongside Schoellkopf Field, which was built in 1915, has a capacity of more than 25,000, and is the 4th oldest stadium in the country. Schoellkopf contains locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and the Friedman Center weight room which has some of the most advanced training equipment in the country.
